Kuyudaki Taş // The Stone in the Well
Ankara’daki evim haline gelen Ka Atölye, 15 Mayıs 2015 tarihinde HUB Sanat Mekan / Cer Modern’de “Kuyudaki Taş” başlıklı serginin kapılarını açıyor. Ben de 30 Mayıs günü saat 18:00’de bir sergi turu için orada olacağım. Serginin sunuş yazısını yazmak benim için bir zevkti. İyi okumalar.

Ka Ne Demek?
İlk duyduğumda ben de herkes gibi Ka’nın anlamını merak etmiştim.
Bu sergi sayesinde kavradım ki, Ka meğer “kırk akıllı” sözünün baş harflerinden oluşan bir kısaltma imiş.
Kırk, bizim kültürümüzde “sayılamayacak kadar çok” anlamına gelir. Kırk gün kırk gece düğün, kırk haramiler, kırk ayak (Batı’da yüz ayak – centipede), çok, ama çok fazla anlamına gelen diğer örnekler. Bu serginin adı ile ima edilen kırk akıllı da işte bu yüzden, cümle alem, kendini akıllı sayan herkes demek oluyor belli ki. Kuyuya o bir türlü çıkarılamayan taşı atan deli de, kendimi de dahil ederek, Ka’ya yolu düşen, fotoğrafla akıllı-uslu, iyi huylu değil, aksine hırçın, oyun bozan, çelme takan, hınzır halleriyle ilişki kuran insanlar.
Tüm sanat disiplinlerinde -ya da sanatlı disiplinlerde- olabileceği gibi, fotoğrafa da iki farklı biçimde yaklaşabilirsiniz. Onu bir hedef olarak görüp yola çıkar, iyi, daha iyi, en iyi fotoğrafı başarmaya çabalarsınız. Ya da, onu dolambaçlı, bilinmezliklerle örülmüş bir yol gibi görür, derin, daha derin, en derin düşüncelere, onun üzerinde yaptığınız yolculuklarla ulaşmaya çabalarsınız.
Fotoğraf burada bir taşıyıcı, bir çift kanattır. Düşünmek, hakkında konuşmak, dönüp tekrar düşünmek, gerekirse bozmak, yeniden yapmak, aklını meşgul etmek için bir yoldur.
O sadece bir bahanedir.
Fotoğrafa (ya da müziğe, edebiyata, tiyatroya vb.) yüce bir amaç, bir başına, hayattan soyutlanmış bir hedef olarak bakmaktan vazgeçmenin ne kadar değerli olduğunu, iyi fotoğraf değil anlamlı fotoğraf üretme çabasının yaratıcılığı nasıl köpürttüğünü, sadece fotoğraf izleme deneyiminin bile ne kadar yakınlaştırıcı, kışkırtıcı ve içten olabileceğini, bir fotoğrafın var olabilmesi için onu tüm birikimleri kadar, zaaflarıyla da bütünlenen bir insanın bizzat üretmiş olması gerektiğini, bu seçki hissettiriyor.
Sergide, Ka’da bugüne dek düzenlenen atölyelerde öne çıkan ama çok daha fazlası üretilmiş, bir yandan da üretilmekte olan işlerden, ortak kararlarla sunulmuş bir kesit göreceksiniz.
Umuyoruz ki bu seçki, kuyudaki taşın esasen fırlatılıp atılan bir yük olduğunu, kırk akıllının da, gerçekten akıllılar ise, onu orada, o derinlikte bırakmaları gerektiğini hissettirecektir.

What does Ka mean?
When I first heard it I had – like everyone else – wondered what the meaning of Ka was.
With this exhibition now I realize that Ka is actually an acronym for “kırk akıllı” (forty clever people).
In our culture, “forty” is the largest number one can imagine. Hence, a wedding ceremony for forty days and forty nights, the forty thieves, fortypede (instead of centipede)… all signifying a number that is way too big. Obviously, the forty clever people implied by the title of this exhibition are thus the whole world, every person who considers himself /herself smart. The fool who cast the somehow irretrievable stone into the well*, on the other hand, are those who, including myself, have ever stopped by at Ka and associate themselves with the ill-tempered, game-changing, ambush-like and naughty forms of photography rather than its well-behaved and good-tempered side.
Like all art disciplines – or disciplined arts –, you can approach photography in two different manners. Seeing it as a goal, you set out on the road to succeed in taking the good, the better and the best photograph. Or, you consider it as a meandering adventure intertwined by the unknown and try to reach the deep, the deeper and the deepest thoughts through your personal photographic journey.
Photography is therefore a carrier, a pair of wings. It is an instrument that makes you think, talk about it, think again, destroy if necessary, rebuild and be mentally occupied.
It is only an excuse.
This selection of works enables you to realize how invaluable it is to avoid looking at photography (or music, literature, theater etc.) as a holy cause, a sole, isolated target; how trying to produce a meaningful rather than a fine image fosters creativity; that even the act of observing photographs can be acquainting, alluring and earnest; and that a photograph should be created by a person who integrates not only his/her whole experience but also the weak spots into the photograph for it to exist.
In this exhibition, you will see a fraction of the works that have stood out among so many others produced and in progress at Ka’s workshops so far.
We hope that this selection will make you think that the stone in the well is actually a burden cast off, and that the forty clever people, if they are really clever, should leave it right there at the bottom.
